Ceramides – The Skincare Mogul
How to pronounce:
Ser – amide
What is it?
They are lipids/fats which are naturally found in the uppermost layers of skin, in high concentration, which is also a component of the skin barrier. Consists over 50% of the skin’s composition, it’s no wonder why they play an important role in determining how our skins looks like. Besides playing a vital role in the skincare world, they are also noted for their role in our braing and nervous system development.
What do they do?
They help in protecting our skin from the harsh environmental aggressors such as pollution. Basically, ceramides help in creating a barrier to prevent permeability (read: penetrablity). This is to make sure, they are able to lock moisture into the skin to prevent dryness and irritation. These are also the reason to why it’s always related to anti-aging effects as fine lines are often more noticeable when the skin is lacking moisture or dry, in short. Locking moisture might be of help!
However, as we age, our fatty acids tend to lost over time, which in result can cause dull, dry skin.
Although human skin is naturally made up of ceramides, these fatty acids are lost over time. This can result in dull, dry skin. You may be able to minimize these effects by supplementing your skin with extra ceramide.
Some might wonder about natural and synthetic ceramides. Note that, the only natural ceramides are those that are already located in your skin. Those found in skincare products are usually synthetic, which works just as fine. However, if you’re looking for ways to induce production, you can consume carbs like sweet potatoes, wheat, rice and corn.
What can we combine Ceramide with?
Ceramides work well with most product but are most effective when combined with other skin-replenishing ingredients like fatty acids, glycerin, and cholesterol. Lipid mixtures like these are ideal for improving skin tone, skin texture, and relieving signs of sensitivity. But to combat anti aging, it’s best to find ceramide product that also contains antioxidants (which we refer as “skin-restoring” ingredients), for example, retinol, niacinamide, linoleic acid, and peptides.
It’s no wonder why there’s so many raves about Ceramides once we learn about its benefit and all. Shop products with Ceramides now!
